Default Stepper motor wiring. Need help?

I bought a small stepper motor on Ebay where the wires were named abcd. Which of these belongs to the a- a+ b- b+ connection on the driver?

if you use a multi meter set to "ohms"
measure the resistance between each wire and the other 4 in turn
the resistance between the common and each coil will be the same
between two coils you will measure twice the resistance as the common and a coil

I'm not sure if all motors use the same colour coding

    but this may help

On a 4 wire motor you can identify the coils easily as follows:

    1. Turn the motor shaft with all wires disconnected and not touching each other and feel how hard it is to turn
    2. Short any 2 wires together
    3. Turn the motor with the 2 wires shorted. If there is noticeable increased torque required and you feel the "steps" then the two wires shorted together are for one coil. If the torque feels the same then use a different pair of wires shorted until you do feel a definite increase in torque. Once you find one coil the other 2 wires are the other coil. You now have two pairs.

As far as A+ A- B+ B-, it really doesn't matter. Just hook one coil pair to the A+ and A- terminals in either order, and the other pair to B+ and B- in either order and the motor will work. If it turns the wrong direction you can either switch it in software, or just switch A+ to A- and A- to A+.

OOps. Just saw it is a 5 wire motor. and not a 4 wire. Now you would need an ohm meter as the easiest way.

I'm not sure you can use a 5 wire motor on a bipolar drive.

There is no difference between the 4 wires, they all are 28 ohm in any order, but between the vcc and the other is 14 ohm.

    Hi 109jb
I nearly fell into the same trap
    a- a+ b- b+ = bipolar motor = easy to find the wire pair

butI looked at the ebay listing to find its a 5 wire unipolar motor before I posted

On this site I found the text: 5-Wire Motor
This style is common in smaller unipolar motors. All of the common coil wires are tied together internally abd brought out as a 5th wire. This motor can only be driven as a unipolar motor.
    https://learn.adafruit.com/all-about...es-of-steppers

It looks like the motor I bought also is a 4 phase motor, so maybe I can´t run it with a bipolar driver? I wanted to try it on this one:

    Hi jaru-eri

the motor you have can not be used with the remote controlled stepper driver you have

DC Adjustable Speed Stepper Motor Pulse Driver Controller with Remote Control | eBay

I can not see any current limiting on the control board so you need to use low current 5 Volt motors
It looks like an ATMEL micro control IC is driving the motor directly

you can use 4 , 6 or 8 wire but not the 5 wire

with the 8 wire motors you will need the data sheet to identify which pair coils are wound together and when correctly phased,
can be connected in parallel or series to form a single coil

    I´ve now order this one:

    Hi jaru-eri

the new 4 wire motor should work
having the details of the wire colour coding will make it easy to wire correctly
