Your steppers have 8 wires but you've provided a diagram showing 4 wires connected, so how are you wiring the steppers?

I have no problem running 8 wire NEMA 34's with the same DM542a stepper controllers so I'd say your wiring is wrong.. Review your wiring against the stepper motor documentation. There are 2 ways to wire them in, both require joining wires so you only have 4 physical connections.

As you have eight leads, each of the two phases is split into two windings. You can wire these in serial or parallel to match your driver capability.
