Default NEMA 17 Stepper Motor making noise when idle

    Guys -

I am very new to this, so please forgive me if these are dumb questions. I did try to search for answers prior to posting, but didn't have much luck.

Here is the question- is it normal for a NEMA 17 stepper motor to make a minor buzzing noise when idle?

    Here is the setup:
Power supply: 12V power supply from old PC (XT Style)
    Stepper Motor Driver: SMAKN TB6600 32 segment / 4.0A
    Stepper Motor: Model 17HS19-2004S

All of this is being run by a Raspberry PI 3

Stepper moves as expected, but it hums / buzzes when not moving, and makes a fair amount of noise when moving.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ernie

That's perfectly normal. The "buzzing" at idle comes from the high frequency PWM the drives use to feed the motors. The noise while moving - well, it's just the way steppers are. Get some earmuffs or turn the radio up. :-)

Got it! Thank you so much for the quick response. I doubt I will hear anything once the router is running, but just wanted to be sure I wasn't damaging anything.
