Need help! Cross table, Stepper motor + ????

Hi guys,

First of all, I want to apologize for my english ...

Few days ago, I got a old, used cross table (20cmx40cm) with stepper motors Superior Electric M062-FC04E

I have read everything about stepper motor and I will manage to start and use it.

But, I dont understand the second part attached to motor.
It looks like motor (4 wires, black blue red brown) .. but look at that construction ?
Fixed feromagnetic part is mounted around shaft and insisde copper cylinder which is moving(fixed) together with shaft ?
And, all together inside stator with 12 poles. (4 wires)
What is it used for?
Wires:
-red-blue 143ohm
-black.brown 630ohm
Any ideas?
