I don't think that it's a matter of regulated vs unregulated in all situations. I think Tom recommended regulated because the 48 volts is so close to the max drive voltage.

The reason I'm looking at a 48V regulated supply is that it was hard to find supplies with lower voltage and lots of current.
Edit: I should add that I have found 24V regulated supplies that will probably work.

Automation technologies has a 38v 15amp and a 45v 13amp supply.
