Default HSK Style Tool Holder Manual Tool Change Spindles

It looks l am ready to upgrade from my PC 892 router motor to a more commercial quality spindle.

I would like to know if anyone has any direct experience and advice on the commercially available Manual Tool Change spindles from companies like ELTE and such.

I'm not interested in an auto tool changer due to the complexity and expense it adds....which does not fit into my current needs.

    Thank you,

    Rob

A manual tool change spindle just has a collet nut.

HSK tooholders only work in ATC spindles. You can use an ATC spindle manually, but it's still an ATC spindle. So, you still need to pay the very high ATC spindle price

I've never seen an Elte, but have used HSD ATC spindles in manual mode. You just push a button on the spindle to release the toolholder. To insert a tool, push and hold the button, insert toolholder, and release button.

This would be a manual too change spindle, where the collet nut screws on to the end of the spindle shaft.

An ATC spindle has a recess for the toolholder, like this:

    I stand corrected.
Apparently, Elte does make a manual tool change HSK spindle.
    ELTE srl - TMPE3

But I have no idea how you insert and remove the tool holders.
It looks like it's got a small ring that you turn by hand to lock the tool holder in place?
Be aware that HSK toolholders can run between $150-$250 each.

Well I'm off to the races on collecting quotes and data on the HSK style manual tool changer spindles.

An interesting note that I need help with.
One of the salesmen I am speaking with has told me that to run a 5hp 3ph spindle through a vector drive will require 41 amps. That just doesn't feel right.

Can someone in the know share how that works please.

    I've got a 5hp lathe that runs on a 20amp circuit.

    Thanks again.

5HP on a 20A (240v I assume?) circuit is pushing it a bit, would be around 16A assuming 100% efficiency and 1.0 PF, probably more like 25-30A on a real motor. You'd actually have to be using all 5 horsepower for quite some time to trip a breaker though.
41A does sound high, but it's probably accounting for a fairly inefficient motor and some overload capacity (most drives will do 150% for a short period, 10s to a minute usually.)

This video shows the Manual tool change HSD spindle with HSK-C 32 collet being swapped. HSD calls this "Quick Change Tooling" on their website: Quick-Change Tooling. A ball driver is required but you would get all the benefits of tool pre-setting.

They do make an HSK spindle in the 2.2Kw range which typical wood routers use. I'm really surprised this hasn't taken off with hobbyists as it should be a good bit cheaper than an ATC.

I would think that this is still about $3000 or more for the spindle and 5 tool holders, which is far more than most hobbyists want to spend.

That cost sounds spot on. I cant find a US supplier but here is one in the EU: TeknoMotor QuickToolChanger 2.2KW $1,760 and tool holders are $140. So $2460 before shipping, whatever that is.

They sell adapters for $400 which sort of gives you an idea of what the additional cost is over a standard spindle. It should end up being much cheaper than an ATC is you could get it from China.

I'd spend an extra $400 over the cost of a China spindle if it came with HSK-C 32 and say $30 a tool holder. But that doesn't seem to exist right now.

An HSD would probably be 50% more than a Teknomotor.

You can get a 2.2Kw chinese ATC spindle for under $2000 if you buy direct from China.

I ordered the TeknoMotor so I'll find out how well it works out in a few months when I finish building the machine. This spindle is at least $1500 less than the cheapest 2.2KW China ATC I could find.

I polled a bunch of suppliers here in the US and came up with nothing to recommend. Either they were WAY more expensive than the TeknoMotor or they didn't have anything like it.

HSK-32C tool holders are also impossible to source here in the US. I can't even find them on Alibaba or EBay. The only small tool holders that I can find are ISO 20. Haas makes a mini-mill that uses that taper so they sell them and there are much cheap ones on EBay (~$30). If you were optimizing for tool holder costs you would pick ISO 20. But that tool holder design requires an ATC and you have to pay the extra $1500. The HSK-32C tool holders cost more, but the $1500 you saved on the ATC buys you 10 high quality tool holders. Good tool holders were always going to cost real money anyway.

My hope is if I share my experience with this setup (assuming it works well) costs will come down.
