    Default <75mm diameter spindle

    Hi folks

I am designing my first benchtop router to machine aluminum and in my design there is need for a spindle of max diameter 75mm. Irritatingly there is a lot of 80mm spindles and now it looks like I have to forget this cool idea that restricts the choice of the spindle into smaller diameter.

    Or do I?

Of course this is a budget project so basically it needs to be a chinese unit. It should be VFD controlled and watercooled. I assume something from 1,5Kw is enough power for fast aluminum tooling..?

If there is any choise please let me know

    Thanks!

Just one of the many on eBay:

FOUR BEARING 1.5KW ER11 65MM WATER-COOLED SPINDLE MOTOR ENGRAVING MILL GRIND CNC | eBay

Yes, 1.5kW is good for aluminium. I have one (air cooled 1.5kW 65mm) and it works fine. I don't think you will find a more powerful spindle at this diameter. One advice though... you should buy a more powerful VFD, that way if you realize the motor is not what you want you can just get a new motor. Note that the larger motors are also much heavier.

Question no.1 how fast do you want it to cut? if your bracket holder is only limited to 75mm I guess it does`nt weakened that much if you bore it to 80mm. my personal choice on cutting, carving, outlining aluminum materials is the 80mm 2.2KW watercooled, though the 1.5KW is sufficient enough for the job but you can finish it faster by using a 2.2KW because the torque is much higher compared to the 1.5KW variant, meaning you can program it with lesser passes thus finishing it @ lesser time.

In the shop that I worked with we have 3 kinds spindle sizes on the CNC machines, I personally want the biggest spindle power because I can program it with lesser codes and it finishes the job faster. meaning more product output for me thus taking a lunch break early compared to the other machines hehe.

    Hi guys

    thanks for the replys

As a 100% unexperienced beginner on the topic I can't really put any numbers on the desired speed. Yes I have seen the 65mm spindles but framed my question poorly. Is there anything between 65 and 80mm?

Surely the price difference between (at least the chinese) 65 and 80mm ones is not making me to go for the smaller one so maybe I just keep on searching the way to mount a bigger (80mm) motor in my design.

No, they're either 65, or 80mm's. Why not change your design?

It's much easier to design around the components you'll be using, rather than try to find components to fit your design.

Like Gerry, said, there are 65 and 80mm, if you want the round (cheaper) type. They can't make every dimension, it would be far too expensive for everybody. If you could fit a 75mm you can fit a 65, and with a little inventive thinking, maybe also an 80mm. However, remember that if the spindle diameter is 65mm then you need additional space for the bracket. My bracket is 130mm, so it requires a lot more than the 65mm motor diameter. Here is a picture of my spindle in the bracket, installed on the Z to give you an idea of the needed space.

Note that I designed my Z plate so that it can suit a larger spindle also. Currently it is a bit oversized but thinking ahead may never hurt, so in case I wanted to get a much larger spindle I will not have to make a new Z plate. There are also rectangular type spindles which does not need a spindle bracket, but those are more expensive.
