HI
I see very little posts from RSA
Lets us South Africans get going and support each other
I am a retired Instrument Technician and have build several (home build) cnc machines
please introduce yourselves

Hello hennie--
do you belong to prof rudy's cnc club?
regards fred
No. Believe the club do not exist any more. Al the meetings advertise on internet was for 2013 last updated
Hi there guys,
I have done some CNC stuff:
A 1.22 x 2.44m cnc router, a 1.5 x 3m cnc plasmacutter, a new controller for a laser engraver, and currently scratching the 3d-printer itch.
Next on the list is a complete rebuild of the router to improve several mistakes that I made, and generally improve use-ability.
Hi Guys
Recently got myself a Shapeko 2 and having loads of fun with it. As a result I started importing Delrin Wheels and are having makerslide V-rails made, with the hope of building Shapeko-type CNC machines at about half the price. Building has always been more fun than actually using the machine....
Anyway, If anyone is going the DIY makerslide route, get in touch
Hi All,
Based in Cape Town.
Got quite a few NC machines and projects.
2 x MultiCAM CNC Routers( 3-Axis)
2 x Self built CNC Routers ( 3 - Axis)
1 x large Self Built 5 - Axis router (Project 90% complete)
1 x CNC -Retrofit Project on Mori- Seki Lathe - 20 % complete
1 x SeemeCNC Delta 3D Printer - ROSTOCK MAX
Next up is a Raspberry Pi - PLC Controlled Cut to Length BandSAW
Also Trying to Decipher a Chinese Laser cutting machine and get it to work.
Hi guys,
Gert here. Not a Souf African, but almost :-) Im from Windhoek, Namibia.
I have a 30 year old Isel FB1 router, which I retrofitted with USBCNC and TB6600 drivers, running off the original 45Volt Isel power supply. Processing size is about 560 x 960 odd mm. (depending on how close to the edge you want to go, what with me being to lazy to wire up the limit switches...)
I want to build a smaller machine, specifically for doing 3d relief engravings. Relatively lightweight gantry, belt drive, and v-groove bearings. The plan is to use dual steppers on both the X and Y axis, running both steppers on the same axis off a single driver. The holy grail of this machine is going to be very rapid acceleration and deceleration, to maximise 3d engraving average speeds. It does not need to be very rigid, since I'll mostly be using 1,5mm ballnose cutters with very small step-over on soft (pine) wood. My Isel takes about 4 hrs to machine a 180 x 280mm portrait. I want to cut that down to 2 hours.
Which leads me to Phillip's post........ I want more info on your makerslides...... I can be reached on: gjdupreez@aol.com
Also, where did you get the Shapeoko in South Africa? Ive looked into modifying a Shapeoko or X carve as a high speed wood engraving setup. But building one is no problem for me.
Cheers!
Hi all RSA's,
I'm also a South African! (Nelspruit area). But very much a beginner and newcomer to the CNC world and fascinated by it but have a huge amount to learn. I'm about to retire and very keen to go into metal art (plasma cutting) but the costs of machines are prohibitive and not worth the expense, especially as a soon-to be-pensioner. I too have wondered if it would not be possible to build a machine as a cheaper alternative, but I have no clue where to look for components or even if they exist in the RSA. So I have decided instead, to go the manual (hand-held) route and to build my own cutting table with a water bath. Any guidance on this will be greatly appreciated.
@ENZED , you should check out mechmate I have built 2 and they work well for plasma or router. For the power source I recommend Hypertherm. Get a plasma unit that has a machine torch option for later .

Thank you for the advice Maxman. Can you perhaps tell me where in RSA I can get Mechmate components?

Hi SA,
Anyone doing wooden reliefs using Artcam?

Hi Guys,
I'm retired and living in Stellenbosch. I enjoy a bit of woodworking and have been curious about CNC routing for a while now. I've just ordered a driver board, stepper motors and building plans from HobbyCNC and will be building a machine. Look forward to interacting with this group.
Regards to all,
Adrian
Hello Adrian
It is a bit quite here, but Google is your friend, I just finished building my machine. I built a hybrid, a cnc and a 3 D printer, still trying the Cnc side first.
Any way welcome.
And enjoy.
Cheers
Melvin
Hi there guys,
The 3d printer itch is now scratched, and frankly I am over it. The machine works very well and does what it is supposed to do, I just enjoy cnc routers more.
Has anyone had any luck with the arduino based cnc controllers ?
The parallel port pc route is starting to become harder to do, I am very worried about parallel port obsolescence coming our way, and a usb controller is an expensive little animal when your are using ZAR's to buy it with.
I wish one of these windgat little lectronic gineers will man up and do a local version. He will sell at least three or four, in my estimation.............
I use the smoothstepper little board, works well and not expensive. Integrated well with the cnc4pc breakout. Although I am also interested in a arduino controller, I like the stand alone idea with just a SD card to cut from
