Can someone please give me a clue how to use Solid Works to include the facing detail on a solid body electric guitar? Yes, I am new at using this program and am learning as I go. So far, I drew the guitar shape and extruded the thickness and fillit the edges, now I would like to shape the front and back contour to include a more shapely design but cannot figure out how to do it. | Unfortunatly, doing complex surfacing is not something that just pops out at you and in a day you've mastered it. I'd recommend Matt Lombard's new book. Solidworks Surfacing [its one of those 'Bible' series of books] I've also got his 'General' Solidworks book of the same publisher and both are worth having if your going to get serious about using the software. Can you show us a picture of your model as well as a picture of the real thing so we can see where you are, and where your trying to get to? If you search back a bit in the archives you'll see a few pictures of a fast and dirty guitar I did a few years ago.. If I did some digging, I think I could find the pictures someplace.. | Thanks for the replies. I already knew that it's not as easy as pushing a button, after all, I have made it this far alone. I was just looking for a clue to get me in the right direction. Most of the tutorials I have seen dont get into surfacing like I want to do. I traced a rough drawing to get the shape. Here is what I have so far. Steve |

| Hey Steve. I would do something like this. If you have drawn and extruded the body and the routes for the pickups and wiring, and done the filleting for the body, do this next; undo the fillets so that you have a sharp edge, insert a plane on the edge where the arm relief is, as though you were looking into it's side, so that it is on that surface. Then draw the profile of the arm relief and extrude it with five degrees draft through all, making sure it goes past the top surface and you're in. Do the same thing for the belly cut on the backside of the body. Now when all that is done you can re-fillet the edges and you'll have a contoured Strat. body. I have just completed my Certification in SolidWorks. It's not as hard as it looks. Good luck , Speedre |

| This would be relatively simple by inserting a plane which is on that line [at your pre-determined angle] and using an extruded cut. Or, even easier if you click the plane function and select that line w/ a "normal too" plane and then an extruded cut using a profile w/ the sloped face in it and you'll get your trimmed face. I'd insert it in front of the fillet feature [or you can re-fillet what's left]. That shouldn't even need a surface to do.. [I'm assuming it's flat]
