Do you use a 30" screen for SW? impressions?

I am debating buying a 30" for $900 2650x1600 , or buying $350 28" with 1920 x 1200. I dont really like tiny tiny fonts, but the idea of getting very clean cad images with lots of detail sounds nice.

anyone use 2650x1600 for solidworks? would 1920 x 1200 be almost the same worse better? impressions? thanks.

Make sure you have the right video card for the monitor.

i do have a decent card it is a firegl 8650 equiv (radeon 2900xt mod) would that will be pretty good i think. But how about the advantages of doing CAD work with 2650 x 1600 resolution will there be any productivity improvements? or quality improvements like catching details , surfacing in models better? thanks

well id say the more space you have to work with, the better. It just depends on if you actually NEED it. $900 is a big investment. Id say if your fine with what you have right now, then stick with it.

But some others here might say otherwise. Im not the most experienced with solidworks. But im just trying to help.

I use dual 24" lcd and love it. I design in Solidworks and program in MasterCAM and the extra screen space is extremely useful. While drawing on one monitor I can have email or a pdf on the other for reference. My resolution is set at 1920x1200 and I get a good clear detailed image. I use a Nvidia Quadro card. Bigger is usually better, but even on a 24" I find I have to look side to side some, on a 30" screen it would be much worse.

    Just MHO

    other option

my other option is 28" lcd 1920 x 1400 for $350 Tiger Direct. but the resolution will not touch the 30" resolution. what do you think of going with cheaper lower res. ?

well if you have $900 bucks budgeted, I'd get 2 of the 28" , and a quadro fx 570 card (make sure it can push them both, but I'm pretty sure it can)

    $350 x2
    + ~$200
    --------
    $900

Just when you thought you had it all figured out, all hell breaks loose..

I have a 24" Samsung, 1920 x 1200, monitor run by a pair of Quadro FX1400's in SLI that I use everyday, and have worked on a system with an Apple 30" Cinema Dispay. That 30" spoils me. Don't have to zoom in so much and you can see more of the drawing you're working on. You can never have too much "desktop" for working in SW.

I used to have an old 19" off to the side for reference photos, Excel, e-mail, this website, or other related documents open on, going to SLI killed that. It was nice having two monitors, and I plan to go back to that setup next year when I get a bigger video card to replace one of the FX1400's

    $0.02

I have a 28" and it works well. I think if I wanted something larger i would go to a dual monitor system.

Don't be in too much of a hurry to buy a monitor right now. Prices are dropping like a rock. Not too many people buying and there is way too much production capacity right now. I expect prices to drop another 25-30% within a few months.
