Hey I am a newbie to solidworks and have been trying to get my footing for a while. I am currently taking the design of a Bentley BR2 engine book and turning it into a complete solidworks model for later machining. However I am struggling with some thing in it if you guys could help me I would be much obliged. 1. I Need to make and undercut how can I do this? I will post screen shots to show what I am talking about 2. I need to make a round chamfer you can see the 9 sided polyfon and then a circle lightly shaded I need to make a chamfer to go from there to the edge but round the circle not the edge of the polygon. If you need any more infor please post and ask I would be happy to give you some. Thanks Matt |

| Matt, your going to need to post a larger screen shot. Also, just read up on chamfers in the help menu's thats a pretty simple operation. In solidworks there is no such thing as an 'undercut'.. if you can better describe [larger picture might help also] j

| Thanks, Here is a bigger picture, I will give a try at better describing at the top there is a hole bring through all the way now half way through the hole depth and I need to widen the hole to a larger diameter but keep the diameter at the top and bottom. Imagine a can with hole at the top and bottom of a smaller diameter then the can. i need to hollow out that inside space. Hopefully that can better describe it to you. Thanks |

| I'm gathering you need a slot on the wall of the ID of the part. If that's the case, you can either do a revolved cut, or a simpler way for someone who's learning is to: -Create a plane at the midpoint of the part -On that plane, create a sketch with a circle the same size as the current ID, and a circle the diameter of the slot -Cut extrude to the width you want the slot. |

| The proper way to produce this 'undercut' is to do a revolved cut. The basic's are; Pick a plane onto which you will sketch the cut geometry. Sketch a centerline on the same sketch thru the vertical center of the part. Use this sketch as your revolved cut center line. Do a 360 revolved cut. I can get you a part file it that's not clear.. are you using '08?

That is great it makes sense now, a part file would be great just to demonstrate the concept yes I am using '08. So I am sketching on the top plane I would then create a plane going in which direction? I am guessing going perpendicular to the part that I am cutting? Then draw the center line to match up with the center line on the other plane and revolve the sketch around. please correct me if I have misunderstood you. Thanks so much again. |

| Heres a file which 'looks' something like yours.. The last feature is a revolved cut. Note, the geometry in the sketch which will be doing the 'cutting' [in this file it's just a simple circle] can be ANYTHING/SHAPE.. as long as it will intersect the existing model geometry at some point in the 360 [or however many degrees the revolved cut rotates]. When you save this file, just change the .zip to .sldprt as it's not really a zip file.. I just changed it to a zip extention 'caus we can't add sldprt files to messages.. Hth J
