    SolidCAM CSS Turning

    Hello,

does anyone know if SolidCAM constant spin speed function (CSS) when turning adjusts the spindle rpm as the radius of cut changes OR if it adjusts the speed of the tool movement to keep cut depth constant? As I have a lathe on which the spindle speed can not be controlled by the computer I require the later of these two options? How do I achieve it?

    Thanks,

    Chris.

This seems a bit of a strange request!
My understanding of CSS is to maintain a constant surface speed of material running past the tool tip. If you don't have the ability to control the spindle speed during a cut, but can program the feed rate as a feed per rev then you will still maintain a constant depth of cut for every revolution that the part makes past the tool, what you won’t have is the correct surface speed at the tool tip when the tool gets closer to the centre and thus ending up with the ripping material effect!
