    Solidcam Turning setup problem

    Solidworks 2010, Solidcam 2008 (R-12)
I have been using milling for a while with good success, thanks to all the good tutorials available.
Now I am trying to learn turning. I keep getting a collision alert on the right end of the part when I try to face it. I have the material set and the chuck is OK, but there seems to be some sort of work holder on the opposite end from the chuck. How can I turn this off?

Also, it seems I need two operations to do the face and the long side profile. Can this be combined?

    Thanks!

    Ron,

SolidCAM turning is a very different beast to the milling side. You need make sure that everything is set properly in the CAM settings before you begin i.e. Target, Stock and Workholding. The stock can be confusing as it is set in two places, once as a sketch and, if you use a stock model, once as a 3D model.

The combination of facing and turning is achieved by choosing the "Copy" option for the turning cycle but be aware that this sees the profile as continuous so you may get the tool acting in a strange manner.

I can't go into more detail at the minute and I don't program for lathes often, so hopefully someone with more expertise on the turning side will add more detail.

Thank you, sir. I have gotten that far. I can make the profile turn in two processes, but the facing stops in simulation with a work-holder collision error. I have no work-holder on the face end of the part.

Does your line that defines the face geometry cross the material boundary? I have found that when facing a part that the toolpath geometry needs to start outside the stock boundary otherwise I get a collision alarm.

    Solution:
Thanks for your help. You got me looking in a different direction and I figured out the problem.
The part was hitting the tool holder. I changed the tool data and the problem went away.
