How much trouble would it be to convert a smithy 1220xl over to CNC?

How much trouble would it be to convert a smithy 1220xl over to CNC? Would I need to changeout the lead screws or could I just couple double shaft steppers directly to the existing lead screws?

Reason I'm asking, I'm getting ether the 1220 xl or 1220 ltd in late spring for hobby use. I like how the machines are built and it will fit in my limited space.

Thanks.

Yes, I suspect that you would have to remove the backlash and or possible inaccuracy in the Smithy's leadscrews...last time I looked I locked down the carriage and had 0.030 or more of backlash.....so I didn't buy the machine.

i have a 1220 ltd when i got it they advertised it to be cnc ready and can buy a kit to convert it but when i was ready to purchase the kit it was discontinued they told me it did not make a good cnc machine ,that was my main reason for choosing it at the time
