    840D Questions

    Hi all:

    I am working with a circa 1998 840D an a lathe.

At start up, the screen gets to "waiting for connection" and starts counting seconds.

From what I've read, I will have to reset the NCU because the parameters are lost or corrupt. This probably due to a dead backup battery.

First question, Is there "just" a battery available, rather than buying the fan/battery module that Siemens sells?

Second, Does anybody have experience reloading the data? I have the back up disk. It appears I have to reload via the RS-232 port on the front of the machine.

    Thanks,

    Jim P

Here is a document for reloading data from a control very similar but slightly more recent than your 840D.

    http://www.fryermachine.com/pdf/Files.pdf

For this control a USB key is used, I guess it would be the same thing from your RS232 with your RS232 settings correctly set.

    Cheers.

Just went through this on a Di control.
Just get the fan and battery. Not worth a fan failure, just to loose the NCU back up again IMO.

The last post is for a 2100, totally different control.

On the Di, we were able to load directly from the hardrive on the op console. It was actually easy. Call seimens and have them email you the procedure for your particular control. Ours took about 10 minutes total.

I took underthetire's advise and ordered a fan/battery module. Should be here next week.

My first time working with Siemens CNC. Found out that saying 840D does not mean much. There were so many variations and options.

My control has a DOS based front end. There is no hard drive.

Siemens says I need their software PCIN or WINPCIN to reload the backup thru the RS-232 port. Anybody have a copy to share? Or, will another program work. (It appears to be just a terminal program).
