Hello Ted, Were are just trying to make sure that this lathe will work for us. If possible, we would like to see the layout of the machine. Do you have a tool setter, if so can it be used when there is a large diameter in the chuck. I have many other questions. lets start with this. I thank you for your time and help, Paul

We have the tool setter (probe) on all three machines. I wouldn't get a lathe without it, not to imply that I have any say on what we get on the machines (large corporation). We received the 1st machine about 2 years ago & I ran it for about a year & half. That machine has a 15" chuck that doesn't interfer with the probe. It's the length of the part more than the diameter that would interfer with using the probe with the part in the chuck. Normally you would set the tools without a part in the chuck & the tool setter then swings up & out of the way.

All three machines came with all the goodies. C axis, live tooling, high & low range. They have plenty of power, we can run a 4 inch insert drill @ 400 rpm (low range) & .004 feed/rev.

One of the machines came with a larger chuck (24" IIRC) that required a special removeable probe.

All three machines needed service within the first few months but have run without problems since. The other 2 machines are about 9 months old.

Ted, How does the removable tool setter work. Was it supplied by Haas? We are thinking of mounting a face plate and turning 30" or so. All of our parts are no more then 12" long.

If your parts are only 12" long why would you need the SL-40L when a regular SL-40 would work just fine? The 40L is a long bed version with 80" between centers, the regular one will still do 40" CC

Ted, our supplier told us that the big bore model only comes with a 18" chuck, How did you get the 24"? What we want to do is remove the chuck and add a face plate.

I went over & looked at the machine with the large chuck today. It is indeed 24". The Haas website shows it comes with the big bore option on both the Sl-40 & SL-40L. http://www.haascnc.com/LATHE_specs.a...LatheTreeModel

I believe we were the 1st to get the removable tool setter. We're closed tomorrow but I'll look Monday & see if it looks like it'll clear a 30" plate.

Edit - How heavy are the parts you want to run?

Ted, at the most, the parts will be 2500lbs. This is only if our 125fd mill/turn craps out. On average, 200lbs. did the tool setter come from haas? In other words, was there any other companies that you had to deal with inorder to meet your needs of the machine? ,Paul
P.S. Your closed on a Friday?! How do you get anything done

I'm 98% sure the tool setter came direct from Haas. There could be a small possibility that the distributor did a retrofit but I don't think so. I'll try to find out Monday.

If there's even a small chance of wanting to run anything over 500lbs (fixture+part) then I would contact Haas directly & inquire about weight limits.

You also need to make sure the turret can hold enough tools for the parts you want to machine. This is critical if you'll be getting the turret for live tooling or when working with large diameters.

I run the machine Tech Ted is talking about and the probe came from Haas it has a long arm Renishaw probe. Definitely check turret tooling clearance as that is a big issue with live tooling. When turret comes to center on face off of short narrow parts with large ODs, the tooling on both sides if not the next 2 on either side come into close if not hitting contact of the part, chuck or jaws. It has a 8" tube bore. 25" is maximum or it will overtravel. Ted I'll tell Vic to stop over.
