I've got a royal grippex. It works good. Make sure you have a good coolant pump for this one.

I just got a dunham bar puller to test. It works good too, but the fingers are easy to break. Don't ask how I know

I would like to try one of the bar pullers that has the built in cut-off tool.

You can easily make your own. Just bore a piece of stock .005/.01 smaller than the diameter you want to pull. Slot it and let the spring pressure hold and pull. Put a chamfer on the I.D. and back bore it so that there is a small lip on the front to do the gripping. This works well with smaller dia. bars up to about 3/4. Bigger stuff will need something with a little more gripping power.

I am pulling 1/2" Cold roll and was considering making one of the collet style pullers. I was going to use A-2 and harden it up or is this a bad idea and material choice?

Bar Pullers

AMCTony,

Take a look at Hayes Bar Pullers (www.hayesbarpullers.com)... I'd say Scott Hayes has come up with a better, stronger and longer lasting mouse trap.. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it once you have had a chance to look it over..

Have a great weekend,

Page with Dunham bar pullers. Basically the same type of thing as the Bp you can make yourself. It's about $160 for the setup for one size and additional size grippers are around $50.

Jarwalcot, is that the correct website for the hayes bar pullers? I can't get it to work.

AMCTony-
Hardening is not necessary. We've made these pullers from plain old cold rolled and even aluminum.

Jarwalcot -

This is basically what I have in mind to make. seems to be simple enough to make inhouse.
