new to CNC lathe

My company got a used HAAS TL-25. I used to use HAAS VF-4.
I found that CNC lathe needs more different kind of tools, what kind of tool holders and inserts are the most basic stuff that I must get first? Thanks a lot!

Depends on the jobs your going to do...the most common tool for face&turing would be a cnmg style insert...which I believe the holder is MCLN-R or L depending on the hand R for right L for left...part off blade if you using a collet comes in pretty handy..check you catalog if you got one Valenite has a pretty good line of tooling...If your going for cheaper holders though like my self (I don't care what brand the toolholder is as long as the insert fits) The insert is more improtant I don't skimp on those...KBC tools carries a line called TMX pretty cheap...the mcln_r holder is like 35.00 compared to valenite @ about 105.00...You'll just have to see what your making and go from there..and if your not sure what too use call in a tool rep they should be able to help you figure out what you'll need.

Is Sandvik good? I actually talked to a tool rep, he suggested a package to me, it's quite expensive. I got that package, and it came with a toolholder for CNMG insert, one 1" boring bar for CCMT insert, one part off blade, one for outside threading and one for inside threading.
However, I think that's not enough, the 1" boring bar is too big. For example, if I want to do a inside diameter 0.73", I don't have enough tool now. What I worry about is those tool holders are not cheap, and I don't want to buy the wrong one. What kind of tool holders are most common? Most likely, We will do some smaller parts. Thanks!

Is there any way you can send the bore bar back? Myself on a bore bar that large I would prefer to keep the cnmg style for both.cheaper in the long run on inserts that way you use one insert for i.d. and o.d. turning.not only that but you get 2 more tips on the cnmg as oppose to the ccmt...on that I.D I myself have .5 bor bar and a .375 for smaller diameter....both from sandvik and they are expensive...but they are good..You'll find over time you may end up screwing up the holders and they'll need to be replaced...that's why I suggested the TMX from KBC TOOLS....It won't hurt as much when you screw one up...They have a bore bar set from 3/4" to 3/8" for about the price of one sandvik bore bar...The inserts I would stick with sandvik or RTW.

Thanks chuy!

Do you mean the TMX from KBC TOOLS can also use sandvik inserts?

Yes...CNMG, CCMT, WNMG, VNMG the NG styles and even the threading inserts some call them laydown type or "M" style depends o the I.C. 1/2,3/8,1/4 I.C. depends on your holder...all this types of inserts are universal..the only one I think that isn't are the part off inserts. If your new to the lathe your probably going to want to purchase the cheap holders first..I'm not saying you will ,but if you crash...you won't feel as bad crunching a $50 holder compared to the $300 holder.

ISO tool bodies will be universal to all brands Iscar, kennemetal, valenite, sandvik ect. where you have to watch is grooving tools, button tools, and specialty tools. On smaller bore bars you can get lathe bushings that rang in many sizes or even er and 5c collet styles. I use global cnc for most of my tool blocks and bushings. Kennemetal bodies are cheap right now also Not as cheap as above but considerably less than valenite or sandvik.

We found that kennametal (I am not advertising) can provide anything for any application.

Good luck

for rough turning you want to use iscar wnmg 430-431-432 inserts. Finish turning you want to use kennemetal cngp430-431-432

I also have the bar loader and the same exact machine. The bar loaders are not usefull unless you are running lights out. I actually am selling mine if you know of anyone. Let me know if you have any problems or other questions.
