very basic question about ID boring offsets

I have a hard time grasping the ID boring offsets, yes I am a newby when it comes to lathes. I have a first part that is about .009 too small on the ID after boring. I believe that I need to put a positive offset of .009 in the offset page, but I don't know for sure. If I put in .009 will it move the bar .009 and make the hole .018 larger? Also when can I change an offset, meaning can I do it in the cycle of a program, like if I am rough boring and feed hold, measure the bore and compare it to what it should have been on that pass, then can I make a change and keep running from there? It seems like anytime I try something like that it makes me start from the begining of the program.

If you have a "rule of thumb cheat sheet" I would love to know it.

The machine is a TL-1, just bought in 07 so the control should be of the newest flavor.

Thanks guys,
Leroy

Did you enter the offsets the way the Haas manual describes? Bore a hole and without moving the X axis push X DIA MESUR then measure the hole, type this in and press WRITE.

If you did this and your hole is too small then either you measured wrong or possibly the tool is deflecting a lot. If your measure after a roughing cut there probably will be some deflection so you need to measure after a final cut.

But if you have done all that and it is .009 too small yes you go to the offset page, highlight the X value for the tool number, type .009 and press WRITE. This adds the .009 to the value in the table; the offset is a negative value so when you add a positive it is less negative...makes X bigger.

Can you change an offset while a program is running? Yes and No . You can change it but the controller will not see the change until you call that offset with a tool change.

My cheat sheet, which is not really a cheat sheet, is the plastic laminated 'LATHE QUICK START-UP GUIDE' you get with the manual. On the back side at the top is the information about entering offsets by TOUCHING OFF PART TO GET TOOL OFFSETS'

Thanks for the help. The manual?!!.......Oh yeeeea, I remember that thing, I should go over it again now that I have used the machine for a while, I am sure it will make more sense now.

No, I just mentioned using the quick start guide. Wait until you have been using the machine for a year or two then read the manual .

When I started teaching myself programming on a HL1 I found the manual more confusing than helpful. But I can't complain too much; my company makes and sells products that I designed and wrote the manuals for. My customers complain to me that the manuals I write are confusing and I think they are perfectly clear.
