so for something completly different
i recently started making these small aluminium electric foundrys and selling them on ebay.and then someone asked me if it would melt brass ,well it sure gets hot enough. so i decided to give it a whirl. well when the brass gets hot enough it starts a weird fire and makes this powdery residue. can any body out there tell me why the brass does that, and how does one melt brass

If I remember, Brass contains zinc and it is very bad for you. It is the same as welding galvanized material, very bad for the lungs. I don't know how to melt it safely.

I could be wrong but somebody will step in and correct me if that is so.

You need to use a flux to stop that, its one of the problems with casting alloys. Try a search for flux for metal casting. I've used Borax for casting aluminum, but i don't know if you need something different for brass.

i have been working at a factory producing zinkdust for paint we also produced zinc oxyde witch are used in a lot of products and i never had any problems even though i got to inhale smoke from the zinc boilers .

i guess the toxic stuff in the fumes are from the welding rods and other stuff they have added to the zinc ..

Btw i guess the flame is kind of green and the residue is zinc oxyde witch is jut zinc burning in regular air
