My understanding is that they are stepper motors and a controller with a selector switch for changing from x, y and z axes. This has some real advantages over the gear driven style, as you can now vary the feeds independent of the spindle and no longer need to run the lathe motor for power feed on the mill. The steppers are designed to interface with the CNC controller as well, so if you move up to CNC, you only need to purchase the controller and plug the motors into it. Combined with the VFD spindle drive, it sounds like a nice layout.
