new drawings way too small

Opening saved jobs are working OK but when a new drawing is opened, it's rendered way too small to be processed.

You are probably trying to open an inch drawing as metric. When you open the drawing an options box pops up. Make sure you set the drawing units to Inches.

Thanks for the reply, I discovered it this morning. When setting the units to inches in the setup wizard, I assumed it would automatically set the drawing units accordingly.

One of the problems with dxf files is that they are unitless. Some cad packages always save in metric even if you draw in inches, some always save in inches and some depend on your drawing. As there is no standardisation I have to give you the option to select which mode the drawing uses.
