HEIDENHAIN encoders any good?

They are considered some of the best in the world. I cannot comment on that particular series but most are repairable and parts are available. I would call the local rep for the information on the one you discribed.

Not only considered one of the best, but are also the most expensive.
They have been buying up other companies such as Accurite, Sumtak and Renco encoders.
The only thing you have to watch is a good proportion of Heidenhain encoders and scales are 11µA or 2v sine wave as well as the 5v TTL differential type.
I have stopped buying used encoders due to failure rates, if off ebay, only NOS.
If you need to know the output type, I have most of the manuals dating back many years.

Thanks you make me want to send that baby another pack of smokes. looks like ROD 476's. Even if the voltage is low I figured i would have to get some sort of reader, maybe pci. I dont know if my C11 or PP could handle 15khz without a lot of loss.

I am thinking a lot of shielding is in order.

I got very lucky and found 6 brand new.

I show ROD476 as being TTL 5v 175mA.
So you should be OK, these typically are around $750.00 ea.
