Help: 5 Servo motors.. can't find details??!!

I have come into a box of servo motors but can't find a thing on them. I looked up all info and serials I can.

All I know is the guy I got them from had them for a while and says he thinks they came from large industrial or commercial printers

Here is a picture of one.



What should I do with these? I can't find any info at all.

It looks familiar and they are stating 24V, 1 amp.

can I simply use any servo driver on these or do I need specific specs before getting a driver?

Don't know much about DC servo controllers.

I have seen this size on Burny retrofits and others for converting small trace cutting plasma tables.
They operate on a rack and pinion with a small fairly high ratio gearbox, this way the torque is amplified considerably and the rapid is plenty due to the fairly high motor rpm and the relatively high distance/rev of a rack spur gear.

These look a lot like the universal magnetics servo motors that I purchased on ebay. I could not find any information about them. I changed out the encoders to HP 500 count. All that I can tell you is that they are very powerful. I was told that they are similar to an electrocraft E543 motor.

Here is the text from the ebay site"4 new Univeral Magnetics DC servo motors with optical encoders. #'s on label read 84735-01A and 2345113013. We test ran these on our bench supply since no other info was available, and what a surprise...about 3500 rpm at 60 volts and could not stop the shaft while wearing welding gloves (actually melted the edge of the plastic pully). Draw was 2.3 amps, and would guess these are comparable to the Electro Craft E543 that we have listed at this time. A local cnc hobbyist came by last week to buy 4 as he said the specs he found on the net were very impressive, but check for yourself.

Body with encoder is 5.25"l x 2.25" dia with a .5"
long .25"dia shaft with a press on pully."

Yup That does help a lot. Is looking better and better.

I think I may just sell these on eBay as these are over my head at the moment. I have no Servo test equipment.

Is there a simple way to test these without an encoder? These are Universal Magnetic servos and the size sounds right on.

Would anyone like to buy one really cheap and test it for me???

What specs are you seeing with the servos you have and those encoders?

I'm stuck now. I think I should keep these for my build down the line. I built a PicStep system, just hard to start again right now. A new baby should be here any day!

Q: Did you use the standard DSPic board on these servos or just the custom config you created? I wonder how the standard (original) would run these.

Download all of the files. There is also a design for a BOB, which I am using.
I am modifying a pre-cnc Sherline mill and lathe. I plan on using the Litton Clifton Motors for this project. I want to use the universal magnetiics motors for an X3 type of mill. These motors with a 3:1 reduction are way over kill for a Sherline. I am not sure, but I think that the peak torque on these motors, is around 360-400 oz-in. At 3:1 ratio 1200 oz-in is extreme over kill for a Sherline. I am also working on driving AC and brushless servo motors.

In addition check out Max-Mod's info. Max has done great work with this project and has his own design and software modifications.
