I was wondering if anyone could help me ID this encoder. Assuming it is an encoder. It is made by Datametrics-Dresser and is model # LDM-1000-5co-1st. I have not been able to find any information online. Below are a couple pictures. I am trying to get specs on the components I have so I can set a game plan for redoing this machine. http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4Qj6pwtP9CU/Sz...0/IMG_5258.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4Qj6pwtP9CU/Sz...0/IMG_5262.JPG |

Dave, The 1000 in the part number is most likely the number of lines on the encoder's glass disk. Since it has the barred terms, it also most likely has line driver outputs (as opposed to open collector or TTL). This is very similar to a model of encoders now made by Stegman. If you look inside an old Hardinge HNC, the threading encoder looks like this one (minus the long housing). The Hardinge unit does not have 1000 lines however. Warren www.uptimecorp.com |

| Thanks for the reply. The long housing must be an add on. You can see the marks from the lathe chuck. You can see how long the motor shaft and coupling is in the below pictures. Can these encoders be used with modern servo drives? I am considering these drives. http://cncdrive.com/ http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4Qj6pwtP9CU/Sz...0/IMG_5262.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4Qj6pwtP9CU/Sz...0/IMG_5261.JPG |

Dave, I don't see why not. This encoder is very typical of what controls many CNC machines. Gecko also makes an inexpensive controller that would accept step input and control up to an 80 volt/ 20 Amp DC motor with one of these mounted to it. Warren www.uptimecorp.com |

| Some systems only accept A,B,M single ended instead of full differential, in this case you can generally just use the ABM, and leave the /A/B/M unconnected. Al.

| Al, I do wish the X axis had a through hole encoder. I just know I am going to be running into the thing all the time...LOL I would guess these use 5v ?? I looks like I am going to be able to reuse a lot of the old equipment. |

| Differential line driver IS generally 5vdc. Al.
