I have some older SEM DC brushed servos that I need to make sure they are in good shape before I put them on a new controller and damage it. The controller supplier told me to Short the windings together. On DC brush servos there are two wires. On AC brushless servos there are three wires. • There should be a noticeable increase in drag, but you should still be able to spin the shaft with your fingers. • If there is no additional drag, you may have an open winding or bad magnets. • If the resistance is not smooth, but has skip spots, the motor is bad. Just what do they mean by shorting the windings together? |

| What they mean is short the armature terminals, when you give the shaft a sharp spin, the generated voltage act as a brake, it is rather a crude test. You can also check them with an automotive battery for current in both directions. Al.

| That is a bit low a voltage and cannot supply much current, off load, once they have reached terminal voltage, the current will be low, value will depend on the motor. Al.
