I know you can get brushed DC servos and was thinking, is all a servo spindle just a large HP DC motor with encoder and controller? IF so then could you use a gecko g320x and say a 3HP treadmill motor to replace a spindle and be able to accurately position your tools for things like atc? If not can you please explain why? Also what the heck do you search for on ebay to get these awesome motor/controller combos??? a simple treadmill motor never gives my anything good! |

| A DC servo motor has a skewed armature for smoother operation. You could either use a SCR drive or a dc servo drive. I use a 1hp treadmill motor on a 16 foot drilling machine in my shop . Princess Auto used to have a lot of these, but not any more. Larry K

I miss the old princess auto that useto carry bulk/excess/surplus not its just a crappy chinese tool store... When you say I could use a DC servo drive I assume you mean one other than the geckos and more of a industrial design?? My whole goal is to get a 2-3HP DC treadmill motor as a milling spindle and one on the A axis (Lathe headstock) and get at least 360deg accuracy for turnmilling. Otherwise I will need to run the A axis with a decoupled stepper and write a macro or something to enable it or remove the belt... |
