AC servo driver for home made cnc

hi all.

why home made cnc ussualy not use Ac servo ?,any advantage use DC servo?
if I use them ,the AC servo w/ driver ,
how to conect the driver to my computer?ussualy the driver conect to plc for industrial used.but for home used with computer ,how to connect it?
if I don't buy the servo driver ,where to buy the driver which ready to conect to my computer .
I plan to use mach3 on my computer.
pls advise.

I was thinking the same thing about using an AC Servo motor off Ebay. Then I saw what they wanted for an AC Drive! Please post if you find one for a reasonable price.

The reason why people have not used AC Servos is because there just aren't that many around to choose from. AC drive technology hasn't been around been around for a while. DC drive technology has been around for a lot longer. In the past primary industry installed nothing but dc drives because ac drives were simply not available. Now you would be hard pressed to see people order a dc drive because ac drives are now so much more reliable. I predict the same thing in the small servo applications. AC motors are easier to manufacture as there are no commutation, brushes, no replacing wearable parts. In an ac motor there is no need for a physical contact to the rotor. I have committed to ac technology and will not move back. It works, it is reliable, and I believe that over time will be less expensive than dc. My hobby router works great with 3 AC drives and a decent breakout board that connects to the parallel port on a Personal Computer. The drives I purchased can also be set up and run using a serial RS232 connection, running G code directly from set up software which can be used to tune the drives. I am very pleased.

Check out Granite Devices drivers, can be used with AC, DC, linear motors and steppers and are cheap. The creator of this drive is on the forum and is a very helpful guy.

Granite Devices products and prices look very good. I suggest that other USA mfgrs of servos also build and sell AC servos that compete at same price levels as Granite so do not think you are limited to these. For instance, Kollmorgen makes an S200 drive, AKM motors, and cable sets that can be had for the same prices or less I believe than these Granite units. I am sure there are others who also have AC servos for same price levels. So be sure to look at all your options. If you want a Kollmorgen solution quote let me know and I will send for reference.
