Reliance BRU-200

Anyone familiar with using the BRU series and non-Reliance motors?
The motor connector shows 3 BLDC commutation pulses but the drives do not show any input for these.
Is special software required or just a RS232 modem program?
Al.

Question Anyone use Reliance BRU drives?

I can't believe how little info there appears to be out there on these, they were supposedly very popular drives.
I am really interested in anyone that has used them with other AC servo motors.
I managed to get a manual, but it leave some questions unanswered

I have 4 of them in a Strippit 1000XP 20. I've been having problems with one lately and it's been driving me crazy trying to figure out what the problem is.

I get an alternating error of either no 24volt or servo not ready. I've had the servos tested, swapped X and Y axis drivers, checked all circuits and paths... Everything I can think of and I still get the problem.

I have the manuals and wiring diagrams for everything in this machine.

If you happen to know what might cause the BRU-200 drive to give the error "Short Circuit Overcurrent or Excessive Average Current" please let me know.

From what you say it almost leaves a mechanical condition that causes a momentary overload on one particular axis?
I could not get any info on the one I had in order to use it on a motor other than one that had the encoder sync pulse, I ended selling it to a guy with a machine that went down.

didn't the bru series use resolver feedback instead of encoders/halls? I used to use the BRU series power supplies for big 50-100amp power supplies for machine retrofits with amc drives on big dc motors....

since u sold it I guess it is a mute point now.

Maybe all the info on them is now in the rockwell site legacy area?

On last post with overcurrent errors, if not mechanical as possibly suggested, on old machines it is not uncommon to have bad motor cables or loose or loose strands in the motor MS connector causing intermittent shorts. Hard to find without taking apart connectors and wiglling cables watching for shorts.. good luck!

I talked to Reliance in order to get some software to change the parameters and they could not find it and said it was lost in the transfer to Rockwell.
Evidentally the model I had, had encoder input, but there was a sync pulse on the encoder that the drive used to sync the commutation via the encoder.
I use mainly non-intelligent drives such as AMC now for quite a while.

This ordeal started with that issue Mike. The feedback cable was old and when jiggled near the end that connected to the servo, it would short in and out. So I went to replace the cable. I replaced not just the cable, but put on new connectors on each end.

I have even swapped X and Y servos at the drive end (not the servo end) and the problem stays with X. So it has to be an issue with X before or immediately after the drive. Even swapping Y drive into X spot, the problem stays on X.

I can't seem to find the proper manuals there. I'm guessing the ones I have are older than they have there. This machine was built in 1994.

I still haven't been able to track the problem down and am completely stumped.

hmmmm.. was the Ultra 200 the same thing? Electro Craft was bought by Allen Bradley and that became the basis for the Ultra series of drives. Perhaps the BRU-200 is similar to the Ultra 100/200 series?

Does this look like your drive:

I have the BRU200 original Reliance manual.
It did not upload due to size, if you need it P.M. me an email address.

datalogger?

I feel for you, I ran a Strippit Cap-1000 for 20 years. Never had a problem with the brush-type Fanuc motors.

Maybe Al might know whether a digital sorage oscilloscope would work to trace this down.
