If there is resitance to movement by rotating the shaft by hand, then try with the brushes out, then it look like you may have to have to at least take one of the endcovers off to see if you can visually see anything. If it is like Hu said that one of the stator pole pieces have come loose, they can be cemented back in place by a high grade epoxy product, if you find that is what you have to do, I can give you the name of one I use. The ferrite pole pieces are not at all porous so it takes a good adhesive to work.
