    Understanding encoders.

    Hello.
    In ABZ encoders the Z is also called "index" ?

    Z, Index, Marker are a few terms used for the same thing.

    I have also seen the term grid used. Imagine as the machine moves X,Y mill or X,Z lathe the index pulses define a 0.1", 0.2" etc. grid over the travel.

    And many systems will offer a software parameter that will move the grid, (Grid Shift).
    This will effectively move the marker pulse in encoder counts so the home position can be precisely lined up with a tool changer etc.
    This eliminates the need to turn the encoder manually to try and line up the marker.
