Encoder

I just got some DC servo's.

Encoder is not labled.

Wire colors are

Purple
white
black
blue
red

Is a Sanyo Denki Motor.

Being new to all this, which wire goes where. Plan to use Rutex drives with them.

More data please. Exact model number of motor is useful.
If no data available, I would try to put 5V current limited to 50-100mA on Black (0V) and Red (+5V).
Then I'd try to turn it slowly while watching the other leads with a scope. And I would expect to see a 2 phase signal on two of them, and an index signal on the third. Let me guess the white is index.

Sorry. That motor I have nothing on.
But if noone comes up with the definite answer, try my suggestion. If you don't have a scope, an analog voltmeter can be used, but then you have to turn the motor veeery slowly. You may get 4000 or more swings of the needle for one revolution! Use a long stick fixed to the shaft and move the end of it.

I always had luck with this procedure. If you're sure it is an encoder and not a resolver that is. In that case you will not find what you're looking for. Neither will you be able to use it with a drive expecting an encoder.

Buy me a Beer?

As suggested I would put common and 5v on the black and red respectively and check with a meter, if you can see the glass scale and the graduations are distinguishable, it will probabally be about 100 to 300 pulses per rev on these motors. I have a couple of these but I scrapped the encoder due to low resolution, also you may be able to see the resolution printed on the center part of the disc (in good light!). Also with the cover off look at the IC numbers and it will give you an idea what kind of voltage/drivers the encoder output is
