    AutomationDirect

I do not work for or endorse AutomationDirect.com That being said, they have some amazing prices for OEM quality machine electronics...complete servo and stepper systems, PLCs, industrial PCs, etc. I picked up 3 AC 1000w servos (encoders, brakes and sealed against moisture) with drives for $1500. That was by far the best price I could find for BRAND NEW servos and drives. I also bought a 5 hp AC induction motor and vector-drive for less than $1000. My mini-mill will now have a lot of the features that commercial units offer for not much of an investment. Just wanted to share the news.

I apologize. I meant $1500 per axis, which is $1635 to be exact. Total cost for 3 axes is $4995 for low-inertia 1kw servomotors. For medium-inertia 1kw servos the cost is $1825 per axis, total cost for 3 axes is $5475. However, if you were interested in a non-braking version for low-inertia servos (1kw size) the price is $200 lower per axis; $1435 per axis (low-inertia), $4305 per 3 axes. As is the medium-inertia servos w/out brakes. Of course this is more money than most people spend on their mills...but when looking at making a Tormach PCNC1100 or a SmithyCNC 1240 mill into a far more precise, reliable machine, the cost isn't totally out of line. For myself, the performance enhancement is worth it, as the next comparable machine is a Haas Mini-mill at $24,000. For this price I can have 2 upgraded Tormachs or 2 upgraded SmithyCNCs for the same investment. Which is precisely what I intend to do...

1kw servos for a mini mill? that seems like real big overkill.
