I have a Bridgeport Horizontal with Fanuc 6m. The 4th axis needs a rebuild but it seems i may be better off upgrading to a direct drive system ie. Torque motor attached directly to the table top. It would get rid of all the wear parts like the worm and wheel and belt etc.
Question is could I use this type of motor with my old control...or is it a non starter. I've seen 200v and 400v versions of the frameless type Brushless dc and also Brush type dc versions too..
My idea would be to build a new housing and fit a frameless motor inside with water cooling and necessary seals etc. The large hollow motor shaft would give ample room for the hydraulic pallet clamp system.
If this is possible I'de like to add a 5th axis too in the same way .. C axis on top of the B axis.
Would appreciate any thoughts on the subject...
