Can anyone tell me if a larger count encoder will give you more precision in your x,y axis. or vice versa, a smaller count. Any difference in holding at a certain point.

High ppr encoders give more error at the small position changes. Therefore position error reduce.

Your encoder count should be able to give you the resolution you require for least input increment, i.e. if you wish to position to .001" and your system is capable of holding positioning to ±1 encoder count, then your encoder count should be equal or higher to this value based on pulses/unit of movement (pulses/inch) etc.
