Brushless DC servos VS. Brushless R/C motors
I was just curious, how are the brushless motors used on model airplanes different from the brushless DC motors used for CNC machines? There are some huge outrunner motors that could probably be geared/belted down for use on our projects. If a suitable encoder is added, we could probably commutate the motor nicely and gain closed-loop feedback as well. Check out the stuff from AXI.
If they are anything like the DC R/C motors, they have like 5 turns of a heavy gauge wire for the windings and draw like 4.2 billion amps. :-) I am not sure they would be very controllable at slow speeds without an extreme amount of heating. Of course I have never tried one as a servo, so I could be wrong.
It would take some convincing to get me to buy a R/C brushless motor for 2x what I can buy a brushless servo with encoder on ebay.
