    Servo amplifiers and BEMF

So I am doing my research as I get going on my project and I am trying to figure out if I need to protect the servo amps from back emf. The drives have shunt regulators which shunt the BEMF to the power supply, but since amplifiers don't have a power supply do they have a dissipative element or should I somehow protect the amp from the back emf? How is this typically done in practice?

"but since amplifiers don't have a power supply"

Generally all modern drive have a P.S. either external or internal, unless it is a SCR drive, which is not all that common, at least for new installations.
As a general design rule, most have switching devices that have reverse EMF protection built in, as well as reverse diodes fitted across the devices.
If you google simple H bridge designs you can get the idea of what is used.

    Thanks Al, as always!
