What are good servo's

Hi,

At this moment I have a small cnc router, the dimensions are 23.6 inch to 47.2 inch I'm thinking about it to put servo's on it...the problem is I have no idea what servo's are good for this dimensions and how expensive they are all included.
Do you guys have an idea?

Later I want to build a new machine from 59 inch to 98 inch and use the engines on the new one too.

Thanks for your reaction
Tom

Hi Tom,

If you want to eventually use these motors in the bigger machine, you should size them for the bigger machine from the start...

Hi Tompie,

I'm not an expert on servos, but I do know that the size of your servos will depend on what you're going to cut and especially how fast you want to do it.

Actually, I'm sort of in this dilemma myself, trying to figure out how much cutting force I'll need. There are lots of people on this forum who probably know from practical experience how much force they need for a typical wood router. Anyone want to chime in here and give a rule of thumb?

Another way to look at it is this. Are you using steppers now? If so, do they provide enough cutting force to do what you want the servos to do? Swapping out the steppers for servos of equal torque ratings should yield a faster machine with the same cutting forces or better.

Does anyone out there have a chart showing cutting force required at different cutting speeds? I guess you'd need one chart for each material/cutter combination...
