I have a stepper motor CNC router but I want it to go MUCH faster. The motors are 300 oz currently. K2CNC has an assembled 3-axis Gecko drive and 3 300oz motors in a package. My question is would this work well on my set up? Is there a difference between a stepper rated at 300 oz and a servo rated at 300 oz? I know the servos spin much faster and have to be geared down more but will it still give me speedy results? Thanks

| A servo rated at 300oz-in is usually more powerful than a stepper of the same rating because it reaches that torque at a higher speed. If you were to gear down the servo to spin as fast as your steppers, it would have much more torque than the stepper. How do your steppers perform now? Do they stall? If not, you may just leave the pulley (or other drive) ratio the same and take the extra speed that the servos offer. Do you have a target speed and cutting force? If you want to know if servos would be a good enough upgrade for you, there are some simple calculations that can give you a yes/no answer.... |
