Need Help!- Servo control help

Hi,
I am trying my first project where i intend to control a RC servo using matlab and an RC servo controller IC (via serial port).

I have never done any of this and from reading the manual on the servo controller it seems i just need to send it binary strings through the serial port which seems possible after some searching.

Does anyone know of any manuals/guides/resources that could help or point me in the right direction of some good online resources etc.
there does not seem to be very much around from what i have found on google.
