Hi,
I'm new to servos and have only used mach3 and open loop steppers. Im based in the UK and am looking for a control board to run some delta servo motors. I currently have a uc300 usb board of that's any help? Or would it be best to just use something totally different?
Thanks in advance.
Dave.

Hi,
Sorry I didn't mention the servos come with there matching amplifiers.
These drives do have step and dir inputs bit I know that using the UC300 it wouldn't be a entire closed loop system. So I was looking for suggestions for another board that can count the pulses from the encoder to manage the motor drives.
You'd need to use LinuxCNC to run truly closed loop, so probably a Mesa board.

What is the model number of your Delta drives? There are a couple of controller options that would fully close the loop and be compatible with Mach3. Both Galil and Kflop/Kanlog controllers would do what you want, depending on your Delta drives. There may also be some other options that I'm not aware of.

The loop is closed in the servo drives, is just as good as any other type of closed loop, and less complicated
LinuxCNC if you want to close the loop with in the computer, you would need a Mesa board to add for this, you already have the UC300 this is your easiest way to go, you will not gain anything by using a different control

There are features that you get with combined controller closed loop that don't come with independent closure. The loop is closed in the servo drives, is just as good as any other type of closed loop, and less complicated
Electronic Gearing, electronic cam, constant surface feed etc.

Electronic Gearing is part of all quality intelligent Servo Drives, and has been for at least 25 years, constant surface Feed used for lathe's mostly, is a G-code function, which is part of any good control software, or can be stand alone with a constant or adjustable pulse train from a control to a Servo Drive
The servo drives davemorl is using have electronic gearing
Mactec54
Then they must communicate with other drives, as for e.g. the Galil can have one master and several slaves geared of one.
Also change electronic ratio on the fly.
FAQ: What is electronic gearing for servo motors?

You do realize that closing the loop in the control software is neither the cheapest or easiest option.Obviously I'd be looking for the cheapest and reasonably easiest option.

For some definition of cheap I guess.. You can do 6 axis closed loop control with linuxcnc for $279 with mesa hardware. Want to know your exact following error at any time? Sure!

It may be a bit harder to setup - but I like knowing exactly what my machine is doing.

[QUOTE=davemorl;2116298]Ok! Thanks! I think I'll stick with the UC300 for the time being. I have heard that UCCNC performs well if not better than mach3 also so I think I'll give that a go.
i use uc300eth and mitsubishi servos- the drives follow perfectly. uccnc is superb software and very customisable. it definately does a better job than mach3/galil combination- which ive used for last 6 years on one of the other machines. i also have uccnc working with a galil for simple dumb analogue drives :-)
