This should allow us to figure out what the command signal input needs to look like.
I did take a quick video of them but I didn't see anything else underneath them or on them that had more numbers (other than what's visible on the picture)
    Here's the video link:

It looks like they're mounted to a black piece of plastic which is mounted to the aluminum. The black piece is covering the back of the boards. Id rather not remove them from the black piece but I will if you think more info might be there...

The answer is at 0:45 in your video. That is a proprietary board and drives. So the short answer is: I dunno.

I can offer a couple of options:

This drive will run the existing motor MCG DMC6D BRUSH TYPE PWM SERVO AMPLIFIER DMC 6D | eBay

It would require a home built handheld controller to operate it, but not a very good option IMHO.

I would replace the motor with a stepper motor. Simple to wire up and will work.

    and one of these

ugh... thanks for the advice. I'll have to decide what to do next.
Have you seen this thread by the way...?

Maybe you have some advice on that, it's the reason I started this thread.

Have you tried contacting PracticalCNC to see if they have information/details etc on the machine?

With regard to the diving problem, that sounds like electrical noise. Making sure that the grounds are all connected back to a single point might be helpful. Shielding the encoder cable might also be a help.

    Al.

It seems that they don't exist anymore.

Yeah, it was a ground problem before, and I ran a new ground wire again this time, but maybe I need to take another look and check all my grounds... Thanks for the tip about shielding the encoder cable, I'll try that as well.

I'm not too impressed with the el-cheapo USencoder add on's and a RJ45 connector and cabling!

I think there was a reason Practical CNC went out of business....
