There is, or was, in the National Electric Code, a specification that in a garage (where you might have flammable vapors present) all outlets must be at least "x" inches above the floor. As I, like many of us, have my "new" mill in the garage, I need to install a new receptacle up high off the floor to comply with this requirement. (I'd mount it up high anyway, just to make it easier to get to.) Now that the NEC has been rewritten, I'm unable to find that requirement in the 2008 code book. Anyone remember what the requirement is, or if it's still there, or where it's now located? Tom |

| I know it doesn't apply to you, but I just checked the CEC-simplified, and we (Canada) don't well didn't as its an old copy, list a minimum, just a recommended 12" although the vapors comment does make sense. What about the conference centers, classrooms and workshops that have outlets on/in the floor then??? |

| Doesn't apply to things like classrooms, conference centers, etc. In a garage where an automobile is stored, there exists the possibility of gasoline vapors, which are heavier than air, if I recall correctly. Hence the requirement to have outlet of the floor, by perhaps 48" But I don't remember the figure. If I'm ready today, I'll just have the new outlets about an inch higher than the old. If not, tomorrow, I'll call the electrical inspector and ask him. |
