    need help hooking up encoder

hi all, just got my 2000 series drives and want to hook up my encoder. My encoders are HEDS-9140 encoders. Do i need to use the R2210 - Single ended or TTL, encoder interface or can i just wire the encoder straight to a piece of cat5 cable just for testing? newbie at servos here and getting confused fast...
