    Rhino Versions

From what I've read on this forum it seems that Rhino is a favourite amongst hobbiest. I just checked out their prices on their website and it seems that a commercial version rins at $995. That seems hardly a hobbiest price point

Is there another version of it out there, like a free version or a el-cheapo one?

There is a student version that is much cheaper, provided you're a student. It seems the price went up quite a bit with the release of version 4. Version 3 could be purchased for under $600.

You can get V4 for $790 here.

The "official" price of Rhino went up from $895 to $995 with the release of V4. "Street" price is around $800 in the US. There is no "hobbyist" version, unless you can get an edu version, those are $195 MSRP, proof of student or teacher status is needed. --ch

    Hobby

For $995, you could probably get a decent "hobby-grade" lathe or mill. While $995 is not small change, the fact that it can purchase [top-of-the-line 3D modeling software is a testament to the lack of greediness at McNeel & Associates. If you are willing to pay $12000 + for a vehicle, and are unwilling to pay $995 for Rhino, perhaps it is not for you.

That's right, it's definitely not for me for $995. I'll stick with my student license of Inventor or buy a $195 student version of Rhino if I like the demo enough.
