    Unhappy Any rhino upgrades

I have been thinking about purchasing rhino 3d for some time but the lack of support for a 64 bit operating system has stopped me as I intend to work with 300MG files and larger.

The problem I have with the demo version of rhino is that it uses 1.5 GB of ram when opening a 290 meg point cloud file.

This means Rhino would need 4GB of ram but Rhino 3d is limited to 3GB as it ony compatible with win XP 32 bit.

From what I understand there is a great reseller there in the UK. I would suggest you contact him and discuss this with him. While my files are not as large as you need, I can open and work on files as large as 50meg and that is with 512ram and a 1.5g amd processor with on board video. I do know that opening Rhino and then again when opening a large file that is quite a spike in the processor usage and I have seen my ram max at 100%, but Rhino would still open and function.

http://www.rhinocad.co.uk should get you to the reseller.

BS!!!! I have it on a xp sp2 machine with 4 gig! I also have it on a laptop running vista w/2gig ram, and a laptop with xp w/1gig ram. Also retired old computers with 2000 ran it but not as good.

All pointclouds will be huge, giant infact. You need a good script to get the file into rhino with "LESS" ram required...

Like connect the dots and loft a surface. I have a script that does it from camsofts machine controller...

I had v3 running and then the upgrade to 4, but both worked well in xp sp2, and slow in vista...

Further more after getting the PC into rhino and lofting you might want to hide the PC and the lofted surface after creating a polymesh surface... It'll make the working file SMALLER...

Ok lastly, I am sure that it will run WAY more than 4 gig and the files some people use are MUCh LARGER than MINE, and I can have some pretty gigantic files. Just have a look in the rhino3d gallery, the frickin ship must be a trigabite.. Also Bongo the animation rendering tool runs inside rhino, and I will guarentee that an animated file is enough to choke up the healthiest of computers.....

Oh well good luck finding a better pointcloud program...

Nice to speak to you again.

What version of sp2 do you have running 32 or 64??

The reason for asking is that win XP 32 is limited to 3.5 GB of memory.
A way around this is to use the PAE trick then the compurter can use 3 GB for the program and file and the remaining 1GB for the OS.

WIN XP 64 memory limit is terabyte so the limiting fact would be the Computer and not the OS.

    rhino3d gallery were is that????

I don't have any other script besides the one's you kindly supplied last year but I was only able to script uniform objects with the scripts.

You should be able to find which OS you are using by going to the Control panel then clicking on the system Icon the click on the general TAB.

I'll look at the alein later, bunch of stairs between here and there, and my knee is giving troublessss..... dam?> thing.... high school soccer, it all catches up 20 years later..

The mind of a 18 yr old with the body of a dead man.... Sucks when you want to run and you can bearly walk...

just ramblin now... Inside all day, and tomorrow is not looking to good... well feeling to good...either.

Oh yea good to hear from you 2... What are you scanning, or planning to scan? My files just got way to big and I also found I could make a drawing just as fast and almost as good... Time is not on my side in the respect of laser digitising, for now at least...

I decided not to play soccer for the reasons you mentioned as the majority seem to get injured -strange for a non contact sport.

The usual guitar body but I would like to be able to scan the hardware as well.

I suppose I will need to take moulds of the hardware.
