I will look and see if I have anything small on my work computer tomorrow.

The file will be huge, even if it's a small model..
You will need a lot of graphics...
You will also need to have a fast processor.
I will check tomorrow and post it for you, if I have a SMALL one..

I bought a laser displacement meter for my CNC mill. I'd like to scan a part in a couple weeks and then try to make a copy. Its a shear for an air powered tree pruner.

Would you be interested in trying to convert a point cloud into a G-code file?

Sure I'd look at it.. PC's are really nothing more than XYZ cords.

Idea on your resolutions? (mine is .002) What about your opptmmm distance to maintain from the part?(7"- with a 4.2" buffer so I can rapidly scan rough surfaces, and the laser controls the Z up and down for big reliefs.

Try this one here. It was made with the new plugin from with Mach3. I had some of the parameters set wrong and it took me 3 or 4 tries to get it to load.

is the pc from a touch probe or laser?
The file opened ok for me via import> choose pointcloud file> and then the file you saved as..

I will look at my perameters in my laser plug in for lofting the surface. I can't remember the easy way... You can do it the hard way via line thought points.

SLPD I hope this helped. thanx turmite

turmite are you useing rhino for point manipulation?

    Hi pointclloud,

From a touch probe. I am using Rhino for the point cloud work, but then again I am in the beginning of learning in too so I don't know how much help I can be.

With this file I did learn something important. You cannot have axis letters in the pc and open it in Rhino. At least I couldn't. You also can't use the 4th axis (a) coordinates, again, I couldn't.

Knowing full well you have much more experience with this, have you found this to be true or can it be changed in Rhino to work both ways?

    Talking lofting a surface..

Give me a minute or til lunch.. I have a part runnig from my protable hd. I have to stuff on the machine controller computer.. I will set the file after the part is finished.. Line #543000 now out of 1,200,000.. The slow stuff is just begining.... A lot of Z at the end...

Althought you can draw a line through points til I get you the faster way.... It's more typing than clicking...
    Hey check out my website...www.cravenoriginal.com

    slpd,

Open the file using all four views. Select the view that is looking at the rows of points so you can select all of one row at a time. Then go to your curves, polyline and polyline through points. Select one of the rows of points and hit enter. A polyline will be placed through the selected points. You can then repeat till you get all the lines in place, change direction and do the lines the other way. You can also select the top view to get the lines as well. Try it and let me know how it works for you.

Once the lines have been created you will probably need to use smoothing on each line you intend to use for lofting or surface creation.
