    Thanks all, I'll head over to the rhino forum. I always thought that this problem was just ignorance on my part. I'm actually quite surprised to find that there isn't the functionality that I want. It seems so basic to me.

    To wrap up over here. Dan posted a fine script over on the support forum that gets this job done. Also, it can be done with the move command as long as you enter random x,y values in as fodder the z "to" value will be absolute to the cp z axis. A single value is considered a movement constraint and acts as a relative move. The x,y has to be in there for the z to be absolute(even though the x,y isn't factored into anything).
