Help with creating surface around mold hole?

I'm messing around with some 3D models from 3d-cafe.com

I'm trying to make a mold of a chess pawn. I've got the pawn cut in half and the sides of the mold in place, but I can't make a surface from the sides to the edges of the pawn.

I've tried several things, creating a new surface manually, trimming based upon the edge of the pawn and can't seem to get anywhere. I figure it would take an experienced rhino person all of 10 seconds to figure out.

I've attached the file.

Thanks in advance!

I think you need to Zip the file before posting.

The pawn model is a NURBS model? How did you cut it in half? With a surface (cutting plane)? There could be several things wrong and several things you could try. Cutting the pawn in half should have resulted in a planar cut. You could try DupBorder on the pawn, that should give you a curve that represents the edge that you cut. Call Properties/Details and see if the curve is closed. If not, that's the problem, the pawn model has a gap somewhere. It the curve is closed, you can try trimming the surface you created manually with the curve, it should work. Then try to join all up. You might have some naked edges though. --ch

I do not know Rhino at all, but in OneCNC, I would first use the complete solid model of the pawn to cut the outline in a planar surface.

Then, I would have created another surface to cut the pawn in half with, as you have already done.

Yep, I needed to zip it. Thanks!

It was some sort of mesh model, but I did to a meshtonurbs.

I cut it in half by removing all the points over the center line.

I can't seem to select only the "edge".

Thanks!

Buy me a Beer?

If you cut a mesh in half by just deleting half of it, there is no edge to select. You'll have to create an edge by going from point to point on the mesh.
