How to Make a Solid From a Vector File

    Hello,

I need some basic help with Rhino. I'm trying to import a vector drawing and make it into a solid. I tried extruding, but that doesn't give me a joined face. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

I attached a .dxf file as an example.

    Thanks in advance.

Let Me first say I use Solidworks not Rhino. I imported the dxf file but had to explode to get rid of the thick area fill pattern that was filling in between the vectors. I then used the vectors to create a solid. I've attached the new vector dxf plus a picture of the solid. I don't know if thats what you were trying to do or not.

    Good Luck
    Mike

Thanks! Can you tell me the process you used to make it into a solid?

Several steps are necessary in this case to make it work in Rhino.
    1) Import the dxf.
    2) Delete the hatch (solid fill - you don't need it)
    3) The inner curves are block instances. You cannot extrude them. You need to turn them into regular curve geometry. And, there appear to be some micro segments in those curves that are bad.
    4) Select the inner 3 curves and use the command Explode TWICE. Once to explode the block instance into curves and once more to explode those curves into their subcurves.
    5) Select all the curves including the outer ovals and use Extrude curve straight from the *Solid* menu. You should get 4 "solid" pieces.

Methods to make a tangible 3D object from a file.

This is my first post, so, hello everybody.

I will jump right in, and offer suggestions to you since I have immersed myself into 3D file prep for 3D Printing and 2D cutting.

First, the most budgetary option (at least for me, since I know a plastic-cutter who charges $1.00-per-minute) is Laser-Cutting. You may find a 2D cutter, in your region, using google and your zip code and search for these options...

Specific types of materials and methods –

    - For non-metal material, you may export the file as a .dxf or .eps – for laser-cutting plastic and wood. Google Search: Laser-cut acrylic and (ZIP CODE). Or PM me.

    - For metal, you could do a similar search. A really good option for cutting metal items – like your sample – utilizes a water jet. Google Search: Water-jet cut metal and (ZIP CODE). The water-jet does not scorch or change color of cut line. Again, you may PM me.

    - To output as a different method, with a bit more detail (like bevels and assorted other geometry), you may use an additive-process 3D Printing method (Stereo-Lithography or Fused-Deposition Modeling or CNC subtractive milling. This may likely cost a bit more, depending on size especially. You need to export your file as a .stl or .obj for this. This is a neat process for sure. Again, you may PM me... I have an on-line service, which I bookmarked that I can share with you. If the file output is less than 65 mm, you just upload the .obj, input the size, and you get the tangible output within days to 1-2 weeks (depending on shipping).

    Well, I hope that helps.

I have a mill that I'll be using to cut stainless steel, so I'm pretty set on the actual production of the object.

John, no need for PMs trying to sell me your services. Nowhere in my post did I say I needed someone to cut this for me.
